It’s up to the government to provide basic amenities, standard infrastructure, conducive environment for the people and ensure alleviation of societal difficulties.
The importance of well-maintained roads to any given society cannot be overemphasized. In Nigeria, however, the substandard quality of the roads, their subsequent neglect and non-maintenance have affected businesses within many communities who would have otherwise benefited from the infrastructure.
In Ogun state, the number of good roads is declining. This tendency is evident in the ancient town of Ijebu-Ode where people have been crying for a long time but not heard because they don’t have a voice. Seeing the deplorable state of roads, one might wonder if a leadership structure responsible for their maintenance and procuring actually exists in Nigeria.
The roads that reach to every nook and cranny of Ijebu-Ode are in a state of neglect, which, by the way, goes against the local government’s infrastructural campaign called ‘Ogun standard’. The government maintains the sole trunk A road, neglecting trunks B and C.

Major roads like Ondo road, Ibadan garage, Molipa expressway, Erinlu roundabout, Otunba Subomi Balogun drive and many more, are all nothing to write home about.
There are many questions we’d like to hear answers to from the Ogun state government. Is there not a single road maintenance agency in Ijebu-Ode? Do people of Ijebu-Ode not deserve better road network? Eighty percent of the roads are not suitable for exploiting. There are thousands of potholes, the roads are not tarred. There are no streetlights. Is the ancient town not included in the “rebuilding” agenda of the state government?
