OSOGBO—The 201 deities spread around the ancient city of Ile-Ife, Osun State, yesterday crowned the 51st Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, at Oke Ora, the spot where Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race, first wore the crown.

The event at Oke Ora, a community located between Ife and Osu town, took place around 1pm at Olokuta Hills, when the crown was invoked by Olojudo of Oke Ora, simply identified as Oba Sikiru.

According to some traditionalists who accompanied the monarch, Oba Ogunwusi could not wear the crown because it is worn only once in a year during Olojo festival which is just a few days away.

They added that the “Are Crown”, which is also called Ade Oduduwa, left Ife town on the demise of Oba Okunade Sijuade.

As early as 5 am, the monarch began the rites that would last all day by wearing Seseefun crown, otherwise called Ade Obatala, and began a spot-to- spot observance of rituals across Ife town.

The monarch, who was dressed in white lace material, was accompanied by members of Isoro cult, some Ife traditional high chiefs, and many indigenes of the town.

At Walode compound, Oba Ogunwusi entered an old building and was received by some women where he spent a few minutes before he departed.

When he emerged from the building, a ram was slaughtered and the blood of the animal was sprinkled on the floor.

Also at a junction around Ilode area, series of sacrifices were carried out and the traditionalists told drummers to announce the emergence of the monarch.

Activities in the ancient town were for several hours paralysed as most people particularly women stayed in doors while the various rituals were  performed.

JUST IN: APC Candidate Prince Audu Has Resurrected? – SPY NIGERIA

JUST IN: APC Candidate Prince Audu Has Resurrected? - SPY NIGERIA

There is a placid drama playing out at Prince Audu Abubakar’s residence in Ogbonicha, Kogi State. Spynigeria.com gathered some Prophets refused to accept that Prince Audu will just die like that and decided to pray him back to life with Holy Ghost Fire.

As at 12:45pm on Monday, the place is rowdy with many shouting that he’s back to life. Details…
According to Josiah Oluwole, a reporter with Premium Times who is in Audu’s village to witness the burial, the interment was officially fixed for 2.00 P.M.But by 12:40 Imams retire to small mosque inside the compound as rejoicing continues, however no one has confirmed seeing him. Thousands troop into Ogbonicha as rumours of revival spreads.

Rejoicing continues but Audu not in sight.
Earlier at 12.32, a mammoth crowd besieged the residence of the late Abubakar Audu as they await the corpse to be brought out of his room. ‎Angry relatives banged hard at the door trying to force it open.

‎Interesting twist as prophet seeks to pray for Audu’s corpse and bring him back to life, security inside and his family members would have none of it but angry youths break the door open.

The prayer man successfully and forcefully taken into the room by the crowd and they joined in the prayers for the resurrection of Audu with Holy Ghost fire renting the air as well as shouts of Allahu Akbar.

Senator ‎Dino Melaye and some family members came out through the back door to calm the angry crowd. While many are largely engaged in fervent prayers others are weeping loudly by the door.

No official word only a shut door and a waiting crowd, both Christians and Muslims.

‎As men and women of faith engage in fervent prayers to bring Audu back to life, men are digging his grave in one end of the compound. The grave diggers are not sure of the story that Audu is back to life.
Uproar as news filters in that he has risen. No official confirmation yet from his family.

Buhari Too Was Accused Of Stealing N2.8bn As Minister Of Petroleum, Says Alison-Madueke.

image
 Diezani Alison-Madueke
The immediate past Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has decried the tradition in Nigeria whereby anyone who occupies the office of oil minister is accused of corruption once their tenure is over.

The former minister, who is undergoing treatment for brea$t cancer in the United Kingdom, is currently the focus of investigations by the UK National Crime Agency and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over allegations that $20 billion oil money disappeared under her watch. In a latest excerpt from her interview with Dele Momodu’s Boss Newspaper,

Madueke recalled that even President Muhammadu Buharias an oil minister (1976-1978) under the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo, was accused of stealing N2.8 billion when the said sum, which was deposited at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) Midlands Bank account in the UK, could not be accounted for. She added,

“Till this day no one has been able to prove that the then Major General stole a kobo”. Mrs. Madueke also mentioned a former minister of petroleum, Prof. Tam David West, as being vilified by Nigerians without evidence that he corruptly enriched himself while occupying the position.

The former minister insisted that all the allegations of corruption leveled against her are false, adding that as a technocrat with vast experience at Shell Petroleum, she was used to keeping proper records. She also insinuated that during her tenure as minister of petroleum resources, she knew she stepped on some powerful toes both home and abroad, just to ensure that Nigerians got the best deal.

Important Things To Do In Your 20s Before You Regret It.

20s

Our 20s fly by before we know it, and we want to make sure we did the decade justice. Did we worry about the right things? Are we where we should be now? The best way to prepare for those questions and answer them to the best of our abilities, is to make sure spend time on what really matters and what may help us in the future. We took a look at a Quora thread that had great advice for people in their 20s who may be wondering what some of the important things to invest time in may be, and here is what we found.

1. Network.

If you form a solid mainstay of people, you are exposed to more opportunities and potential for success in both your career and in your personal life. Build bridges, because you never know when you might be looking to cross them. As Karan Jaiswani put it, “the 20s are all about utilizing your today and structuring your future.”

2. Read. A lot.

There is nothing more productive than taking the time to read. Read whatever you can get your hands on — current news, nonfiction, fiction, career advice, self-help books — anything! The more you know and understand about people around you, yourself and the world, the more easily and successfully you can navigate those very things.

“This will keep your mind stimulated and open to ideas. You will get a number of ideas for each author that you can implement in your life. You will also get opinions from across the globe,” Rizwan Aseem says.

3. Take care of your body.

Making time at night to wash your face, exercise, and remembering to apply (and reapply) sunscreen may not be on the top of your priority list, but it should be. General health care is something that, later in life, you will be glad you considered in your 20s. As Aseem points out, “No matter what you do in your life, you will do it in your body. You cannot replace it, get a new one, or trade it in. This is your body and you will live in it.”

4. Use your time and money on education.

Education is an invaluable resource that you are unlikely to ever regret having. Money is well spent when it is used to broaden your mind and pool of knowledge, especially when honing skills to be applied to your career path. Anuj Kumar advises you to “try different things and find out where your passion lies . . . and then find ways to make a career doing that, adding that “if you need further education, get it.”

5. Pay attention to your mental health and well-being.

While your physical health is extremely important, investing time into taking care of your mind should not be forgotten. Stimulate it, challenge it, be conscious of what you’re exposing it to daily, and take care of yourself. Aseem makes the point that, “The mind, like anything else, has the characteristics of a muscle. You use it, or lose it. And as long as you are using it, it will remain fit and healthy. The minutes you stop using it, it will decay and rust.” So use it!

6. Learn new skills (and master them).

While the advice to “follow your passion” can be good in the general sense, John. J. Bowman urges those in their 20s to master and control a set of skills that can be used to benefit you within the field you are passionate about.

7. Create and maintain good habits.

The hardest part of creating good habits is getting started, but once you are able to master them, they will have an undeniably positive impact on your day-to-day as well as your future, because, as Rizwan notes, “once a habit is established it lasts for a life time.”

8. Build meaningful relationships.

Now is the time to drop the fair-weather friends and make time only for those who are really going to stick around and be positive forces in your life. As you mature, so should your relationships, so you don’t have time to waste on people who will be harmful rather than helpful in your pursuit of your future goals.

9. Eat well.

Spend time planning meals, learning healthy recipes, and overall taking what you’re eating into consideration regularly. Gone are the days when donuts, chips, and sodas can pass as a full day’s meal. Even it if takes a little more time and effort, your future self will thank you when you find yourself maintaining your energy and healthy body as you age.

10. Establish a system for handling finances.

Sit down and figure out how you are spending money, what you are spending it on, and what your ongoing expenses are. “If you take care of your finances starting today they will take care of you when you most need them. When you are old, or sick, or sending your kids to school, or helping a parent through sickness. Your finances will help you,” Aseem says. Big pitfalls to avoid: bad business opportunities (if it seems to good to be true — it is), overuse of credit cards, and choosing not to save or put money aside for a rainy day.

11. Travel.

In your 20s, you’re full of enthusiasm and energy and usually have the mobility to indulge a bit of wanderlust. So indulge it. Experience new cultures, countries, and challenges. You will learn things that you can take with you and apply to your life back at home.

12. Communicate with loved ones.

Make an effort to remember birthdays, holidays, and important events. Your family and close friends can act as your support system when you need it, but you should put the time in and return the favor. Small gestures that show you are thinking about the people who love you go a long way, so take the extra five minutes to write a nice card and stick it in the mail, or schedule that quick Skype call — you won’t regret it.

13. Examine what you really want in life.

It’s easy to get caught up in the everything going on throughout your 20s, and people often forget to actually sit down and contemplate what it is they really want. Tonya Turpin advised that you “actively, and with intent, become aware of the world and everything it holds. Not just about the outside world, but also the one in your head. Spend time alone because it is the only true way to get to know yourself. Be curious and question everything.” Make the time to figure out what you love, and map out a plan of how to get it.

WOW!!!.....Unilorin Set To Use Drones For Exam Monitoring And Surveillance

DronesTeaser

If the authorities of the University of Ilorin accede to suggestions by members of the institution’s Drone Team, it is highly probable that the University will, in future, monitor examinations conducted within the campus with drones.

The drones, developed by a team coordinated by Prof. Sulyman AbdulKareem of the Department of Chemical Engineering, added colours to the just concluded 40th anniversary/31st convocation ceremonies of the University.

Other members of the Unilorin Drone Team include Dr. M.T. Yakubu of the Department of Biochemistry; Dr Babalola of the Department of Physics; Engineer Eric and Mr. Ahmed, both of the Department Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

In separate interviews with Unilorin Bulletin last Thursday (November 12, 2015), the Co-ordinator of the team, Prof. AbdulKareem, and another key member of the team, Dr. Yakubu, said that drones can be used to monitor the conduct of examinations in future as well as general campus surveillance in conjunction with the security personnel”.

According to Prof. AbdulKareem, “the use of drones has come to stay because where you don’t want to endanger human life, a machine, which a drone is, can go there and still get the information you need”. He pointed out that “drones, rather than infringing on human rights, actually protect human rights because the man who wants to do evil and knows that a machine can remotely capture his act, will not likely do it”.

The Unilorin Drone Team Coordinator, who is the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, disclosed that some academic departments in the University have started showing interest in the use of the drone. He said, “I believe that apart from giving practical knowledge to those in Geography, Electrical Engineering and Physics, virtually any Department that may have a reason to capture events beyond what is in front of the camera, which has to be aerially covered, can use the drone.”
Prof. AbdulKareem urged the University administration to challenge people to do more “because there are lots of students who are eager to learn and who have ideas that they can put into practice if they have good supervision. He said, “I believe it is a matter of encouragement.

Most Nigerian universities should be able to do wonderful things and make major breakthroughs”, noting that some students were co-opted into the team to learn how to operate or fly the drones.
The Drone Team Coordinator enjoined the newly appointed ministers especially for the areas of science and technology, “to see a need for us to self-develop, self-evolve, and self-emancipate as a nation”.
He said, “For a long time now, we have relied on personnel from foreign countries to bail us out of every technical problem we get into, but the issue is that, we have so many Nigerians that are trained abroad that are here and even those who have not left the country that are equally talented that should be encouraged to do wonderful things for the nation.”

Prof. AbdulKareem maintained that the new ministers “should see their appointments as a chance of working with the academics in the educational institutions to promote what will be good for the nation, to make the nation as a whole self-reliant on personnel that are available locally.”
In the same vein, Dr. Yakubu said, “We can also use the drone to monitor what is happening on our borders; we have a very vast amount of land, and we can use it to track activities that are going on there. Invariably, we can use the drones to cover the entire University and in getting information to the appropriate quarters. ”

So painful!!!.....Abubakar Audu, APC’s Governorship candidate feared dead

Abubakar Audu after voting
                        Abubakar Audu after voting

Prince Abubakar Audu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the just concluded Kogi state election which the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared inconclusive is feared dead.

INEC returning officer for the election, Prof. Emmanuel Kucha of Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, said no party could be declared the winner yet since the numbers of cancelled votes was more than the difference between the first placed Prince Abubakar Audu of APC and the second placed Capt. Idris Wada of PDP.

Should the election not have been declared inconclusive the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Abubakar Audu, would have emerged the winner of the Kogi State Governorship election which held on Saturday.

Prince Abubakar Audu, was the first Executive Governor of Kogi State and was born on 27 October 1947, to the family of his Royal Highness, the late Pa Audu Oyidi, Orego Atta of Igala Land and the paramount ruler of Ogbonicha-Alloma in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Kogi poll: ‘PDP will win with 55% votes’

Kogi state Deputy Governor, Mr Yomi Awoniyi,

The Kogi state governorship election held Saturday went peacefully in all the 21 Local government area of the state aside some little upheaval in Anyigba, Dekina LG where hoodlums attack some polling units.

It took the efforts of security operatives who were drafted to the area to arrest some of the hoodlums and brought the situation under control.

Though INEC polling officials arrived early at their duties post along with voting materials but their was mixed feeling on the use of card reader as some of the card readers malfunction forcing the official to result to the use of manual accreditation.

One of the victims of the card reader malfunctioning was the Governor of the state, Capt. Idris Wada who by 11:30 am had gone for accreditation only for his finger print to be rejected by the card reader.

Also, there was a mild drama at the odu 001 polling unit in Ogboyaga,  Dekina LG, when the name of the governors wife, Hajia Halima Wada, was not found on the voters list.

However, the deputy governor of the state, Yomi Awoniyi has expressed fear that the APC will still rig the election.

Yomi stated this shortly after casting his vote along with his wife, Tokunbo Awoniyi at the Ileteju Ward 002, in Mopa, Mopamuro LG said, information reaching him shows that 10 buses carrying ‘foreign’ body were seeing entering the state.

“We (PDP) can only win this election if it is free and fair, but will doubt that, judging by the body language of the opposition. But going by our projection, PDP will win with 55 percent of the votes.”

Though their were huge turnout of voters at many of the gladiators home town across the state, some other places visited reflect voters apathy.

The candidate of the Labour party Dr. Philip Salau said the exercise is orderly except few polling units where he had information that card readers are not functioning and late arrival of materials.

” Before now, we had reliable information that a political party would jammed the card readers to justify the use of manual accreditation so that they can thumprint the ballot papers. We petitioned INEC on this and it seems our prediction is right,” he said

Also speaking the Senior Special Assistance to the Governor on Okene local government, Yahaya Karaku, commended INEC for early arrival of materials.”If things continue and end  the way they started, credit would go to President Muhammadu Buhari. Things are going well smoothly and materials arrive on time.”

Aside this development, their were hitches by security operative reaching their point of deployment as many of them have to seek for ‘black market’ to get fuel for their vehicle to take them to their respective destination.

This development resulted to security operative showing up late at some of the polling unit while some did not even get to their post until after accreditation.

Aside the land survey, their were regular aerial patrol by security personnel which brings about calm to the atmosphere.

ABA—FAMILY of Iheanyichukwu Onumaraekwu has cried out to the government and public spirited individuals to save the life of their 14months old child, Miracle, who had been diagnosed with hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the brain, causing enlargement of the head.

While the first two children of the family who are in their early teens have been living their normal life, the case was not the same for their sibling; Miracle who needs N2m to undergo surgery to correct the abnormal growth as the family places hopes on the surgeons at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku Ozalla, Enugu State to save his life.

Due to Miracle’s illness, the first two children of the family have been withdrawn from school. On several occasions, the children have accompanied their parents to various places seeking medical and spiritual help as was the case of their visit to the Abia State Polytechnic play ground when the General Overseer of Deeper, Christian Life Ministry, Pastor Williams Kumuyi visited Aba, for a Combined Service Programme.

Apart from the swollen nature of his head, Miracle is also in pains due to the sores on his head, as he has been bedridden since November 2014 when the sickness was diagnosed. In an interview with South East Voice at the religious programme, where his parents had come to seek for spiritual healing of their baby during Pastor Kumuyi’s visit.

Onumaraekwu, who hails from Mbieri, Mbaitoli council area of Imo State, lamented that he has spent all he made from his petty trading business at the Ariaria International Market, Aba Abia State, seeking medical solution since the illness was diagnosed.

According to him, “He (Miracle) was born on September 2, 2014. Three months after his birth, I got to the village and saw his condition, but I never knew it would be this serious, though my wife after his birth noticed that his head was big, but didn’t know it was a serious problem.

“One week later, my younger sister called to inform me that my baby’s head was developing in an unusual manner. We noticed the problem in December 2014, 3 months after his birth. I went home and took him to Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri, but they were on strike.

But we met a doctor who referred us to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Enugu where he said the baby will be operated upon to enable him live a normal life. There is no money to make the trip. I have been going from one place to another for treatment and that is why we are here today to see if God can use the Man of God (Kumuyi) to heal our son. The child is in pain because of the weight of his head.”

Onumaraekwu who lives at Owere-Aba area in Ugwunagbo council area of Abia state, explained he visited many places, including herbal homes seeking cure for his child. “We have gone into his treatment because we had taken him (Miracle) to herbal doctors but yet, there was no solution before we finally met the doctor that suggested that the baby will be operated upon.

I am appealing to the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to come to our assistance. The life of this baby is under threat and it will take good hearted Nigerians like the governor and others to come to our rescue. The name of our baby is Miracle and I hope that through kind Nigerians, the significance of the baby’s name will be made manifest.”

WOW!!!......FG bans importation of gen sets

Image result for images of generators

THE Federal government has banned the importation of a very common brand of generators locally called “I better pass my neighbour”.

The Controller, Federation Operations Unit Zone A, Lagos of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Madugu Sanni Jubrin, who disclosed this, yesterday, said, “the smaller generators have been banned by the Federal Government because it is causing air pollution and destruction of our lungs and breathing system.

“That is why they have banned it but people are still interested in smuggling them in, that is why we intercepted them. If you go to the market, you still see them because people have imported them before the ban. So it is the leftover they had before the ban that they are selling because the law did not backdate the ban and it is not an absolute prohibition. It is prohibition by trade which means you cannot bring it in large quantity and sell to the public. That is the type of prohibition we have on this but if you buy one piece, Customs will not seize it”.

Between Davido and Wizkid On Twitter Today (Screenshots)

wizkid-davido

It looks like the cold war between Davido and Wizkid has resumed in the past few weeks judging by the weird social media tantrums between the two.

Davido has pushed back his album more than 10 times within a year and failed to deliver. Entertainment commentators say the reason Davido continues pushing back is because he doesn’t want to release an album during a Wizkid-season. He’s however blessed fans with 2 songs in two months, Dodo and The Money. Shortly after the release of The Money, Wizkid released a single Baba Nla (Final) which didn’t go well with Davido. Naturally, the two of them don’t release songs around the same time.

A day after Baba Nla dropped, Davido claimed he was robbed in South Africa with no evidence to prove. He didn’t lose his watch, his HKN chain, there was no proof of robbery even in South African media, he claimed his manager was robbed off a $50,000(???) wristwatch… Now most people think Davido falsified the robbery event to take attention back from Wizkid following his new release.

Today they exchanged subliminal on Twitter only few will understand. See their tweets below and note the timing

At 12:13pm, Wizkid tweeted this

1. Don’t Compromise Beyond Reason:

Almost every relationship involves some kind of compromise. But there are difference between compromises that help the make the relationship better and those that make you lose yourself. If you have to lose your identity to keep the relationship, it’s not worth it.

2. Give Yourself Time To Heal From Your Last Relationship:

You think you already healed from your last relationship but you really need more time. Don’t be quick to jump at the first person who shows even the slightest interest in you so you can feel loved again. Give yourself time between serious relationships to heal. That way you’ll be better prepared to go after what you want. And you’ll be less likely to compare your new beau to your ex, too.

3. Enjoy Being Single:

Enjoy the life of the ‘single pringle’. It helps you understand yourself and look withing to reach your innermost self.

By the time someone comes along, you already understand yourself well enough not to lose yourself.

4. Know The Kind Of Person You Want To Be With:

Learn from your past relationships. You know the things that didn’t make the last one work. Don’t think it’ll be different with this new person.

Relationships are definitely work, but it doesn’t have to be hard work.

5. Just Stop Looking

This is the very important. Make the process as natural as possible. Don’t force it.

Things You Should Never Do to Your Children That You Think Are Acts of Love.

son-388523_1280(1)

We want to give our children the best. We would love to give our children all the things we never got to have. But sometimes parents go too far with the way they show their affection. And this doesn’t bring the best out of our kids. Before things get out of hand, pay attention to the points listed below.

1. Making them feel like kings.

It is important to make your kids feel special, but losing your authority to them will only have negative consequences. a$$erting your authority means establishing borders, boundaries and limitations as you raise them. Although it is vital to entrust them with certain responsibilities, it is your duty as the parent to guide them through it and make a success of whatever they are given.

 2. Entrusting them with too much money.

Money is a tool; it is never an ornament. The earlier you make them understand this, the better off your kids will be. Although we live in a time of abundance and so many easy options and access, it is your job to manage resources, however abundant. Entrusting them with a million dollars or buying expensive jewelry for them in their early years will be too much for them to handle, and the end result will be a child who is not thankful for anything.

 3. Stopping them from working.

Work is essential in life. Every responsible adult has to work to earn a living. Making them understand this is beneficial to their success as adults. Understandably you may want to protect them from anything that is laborious but teaching them the vital lesson of work will be more protective than destructive. Set expectations for them as they try to go to college. Let them appreciate earning something of value and feeling proud of this. 4. Encouraging them not to give back. One of the most essential lessons my parents taught me was why I should give back. That is the flow of life. You take and you give. Do not hold your children back from wanting to reach out and volunteer whether in deeds or in charity.

 4. Not requiring them to be grateful.

You may feel your child deserves everything he/she receives and owes no one a thing. But this does not stir an appreciative spirit in them. Words like “thank you” have a way of making them understand the importance of everything they are given.

 5. Acting like a spoiled child before them.

We as parents are supposed to lead by example. Our children should see that responsibility in us, that we are firm and tact. We shouldn’t be whining and complaining about everything in front of them.

 6. Failing to establish boundaries.

By nature kids want to be pampered and spoiled. It is not your duty as parents to make this happen. Rather, you are meant to make sure they become well-behaved and likable. To do this, limitations and restrictions are meant to be established; if not, the child becomes disrespectful and rude.

7. Letting them have their way all the time.

It is all about picking what you should be giving to them and what you shouldn’t. There is a difference with wanting a new gadget or having candy. It is left for you to choose those things they should have their way with and those things they shouldn’t.

 8. Offering them gifts for the wrong reasons.

If your child is bored with the old toy you bought for him/her and you have to offer a new one as a way to stop them from whining, you are offering them gifts for the wrong reasons. Gifts should be offered to show they are deserving of it and they have shown they are responsible enough to handle and manage them.

9. Discouraging relationships that will build them up.

It is not about being with other spoiled kids. Sometimes it serves you wonderful benefits to take them to gatherings of older people who will share insightful knowledge with them. Let them see the benefits in being thankful. Invite people who are participating in volunteer work to your homes. Stifling the child in unhealthy relationships spoils the child.

10. Withholding your child from being accountable.

Your child should be accountable for his/her actions. Yes your child will make mistakes, but not holding them accountable for these mistakes doesn’t make them see the importance of learning from mistakes.

................Where are will going in this nation!!! The shame in the National Assembly.

Image result for image of house of rep

AFTER months of procrastination, the Senate and the House of Representatives have finally constituted their committees. The setting up of the committees is the signal of the readiness of the National Assembly to settle down for business.

This is because the committee system is the engine room of the legislature – the platform upon which the business of lawmaking and legislative oversight are accomplished.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, who announced the constitution of the Senate committees penultimate Wednesday named 65 committees, nine more than the 56 committees of the preceding Senate.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara had earlier announced chairmen and deputy chairmen for 96 committees with one, the Committee on Niger Delta still being awaited. The 97 committees in the House are seven above the 90 committees that were constituted in the immediate past House of Representatives.

The proliferation of committees is in remarkable contrast to the ongoing shrinking of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA’s) of the Federal Government. This is especially worrisome given that the executive and the legislative branches of government are controlled by the same party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The contradiction in the style of leadership of the party in the two branches of government is indicative of a conflict of ideology, which is unhealthy for good and cohesive governance.

Remarkably, the proliferation of the committee system is not new, having become an operational tool for political survival by past leaders of the legislature. Senate Presidents and Speakers of the House adopted the culture of using committee positions to win the loyalty of lawmakers. Of particular interest are the so-called “juicy” committees, which are committees that give legislators more opportunities to squeeze illicit funds from the MDAs.

To strengthen their hands, the Senate President and the Speaker have further spread the ‘juice’ by splitting the “juicy” committees.
The closest example of a presidential democracy to Nigeria’s is in the United States where the Senate and the House of Representatives each has twenty standing committees.

By proliferating the committees, the legislature is not just adding to its overhead cost, it is also going to make the work of the executive branch a bit more cumbersome. Ministers and government officials are compelled to make multiple presentations and appearances before the multiple committees overseeing them.

We condemn the idea of regarding committees as “juicy” and “non-juicy”, with those who got committees in the latter category resigning or engaging in fisticuffs.

If indeed the senators and representatives are interested in serving the nation rather than lining their pockets, we expect them to stop fighting, settle down and face the work for which they were elected.

The National Assembly has spent six months squabbling and holidaying.

That is unacceptable.
